Emboldened civilians in Basra rebelling against regime
Saddam Hussein's forces are firing on citizens of the southern Iraqi city of Basra who have launched an uprising against the dictator's regime, according to news reports.
British forces have returned fire on Iraqi mortar positions set up to crush the rebellion, a British ITV News Channel reporter with the troops said.
Intelligence from Iraq's second city indicated that citizens wanted to welcome the coalition forces but were in fear of Saddam, said reporter Richard Gaisford.
"Now it seems they have had the courage to stand up to Saddam Hussein and his regime and they will be supported by British forces," Gaisford said.

Good For Them!!! ;D
Shows bravery for the Iraqi people to stand up against the man who has held them under his iron fist for so long...
I still see this war as a charity event... I don't think the US or the UK gains that much from the war (in fact I think it puts us in a more precarious position)... the real winners will be the Middle East- nice to see some of them recognise they are the benefactors of this war and are lending a helping hand!

Over and over? Examples? Personally I think the reps have done very well at keeping the civilian population informed as to whats going on. The expectation of the media means nothing to me anyway since it is ratings driven. It is intersesting though to see the spins the different networks put on stories. The CBC for example are putting a very anti war spin onto their stories where CNN are doing the opposite. I suppose the truth lies somewhere inbetween. da Silva, I'm too lazy right now to go and dig up examples around the web. But are you saying that since 9/11 you have not seen this happening more than once? If so I believe you are not listening to speaches made by George Busg, Donald Rumsfeld, Colin Powell and Condoleeza Rice. But if you insist that you have not heard of any such examples, then I will do you the favour of finding some, but not tonight!

You don't have to dig up examples although I find that the Bush administration is usually on the same page, especially since 911, so I'm not sure what you mean about inconsistencies in communications.

With all this fighting in the south i am wondering if we are being thrown a dummy. Iraq's 3 forces are going balls out to get to the south, and they are leaving the north and west wide open. Hmm i wonder if we have all the reporters down south to drawattention from the N and W. If that is true we could walk right into baghdad, and avoid all that crap.

As warped a reigeme as it is, i don't think they would be stupid enough to leave their back door open and unlocked... especially as they have had the armoured kurd militia to contend with in the past.
To be honest i don't think that the three divisions of elite republican guards to the south are all the good fighting men that saddam has in his arsenal, they are just the ones being reported on, as that is all that the embedded journalists are hearing about. Im sure as soon as the northern front is opened(either using us troops, or US-led kurds((Sound like afghanistan?)) ) we will hear of more divisions.
Of course the media will be shocked to hear this, the public will cool even more to the war and stocks will go down... again.
But thats just what i think.

I wrote this post a little while back, but I can't remember if I actually posted it. It does provide some examples of the disagreement within the Bush administration that I was speaking of earlier....

Henrik; When US politicians give speeches, it is usually to there own people, therefore Europeans and others around the World, do not see/hear much more than snippets of the full speech. We are now in a situation whereby we have to endure a lot more content of those speeches, hence the realization that they (American Politicians) are mostly pratts, is now forced on people who have the intellect too know when the are having bullshit/crap fed to them, i.e. anyone who is not American. The other thing that is becoming obvious, as it was to anyone who fought in WW2, is the American army is shite, with no real idea of how to fight a battle that does not allow them too, firstly, blow up everything in sight, then march in to the sound of “John Browns Body” against a handful of ill-equipped rag-assed solders. If this war goes on till mid April, the Americans will start to drop like flies with the heat. They don’t have the discipline or stamina when things do not go their way and at that time they (the Americans) will be begging better-trained solders like the French to join them.

da-silva; There is a lot of difference between a Politician and a solder, have you ever met a French Legionnaire?
