LOL@Alex.
Lesson # 2:
All wines taste good when served with cheese, if you are unsure about the wine serve a stronger or older cheese.

txt for the pointers. may not be my thing after all, being born in a town of 4000 people. lol we used to eat feta cheese (when we had it that is) and it's still my favorite kind of cheese. nothing beats that with a few tomatoes. my mom has a friend and she annoys the crap out of me with her wines and cheeses. her ideea of a good time is sitting with friends eating cheese and drinking wine and above all talking shit about other people. lol one more question: what kinds of wine are there? i suspect they're divided into categories and such, and educated people are supposed to know these things I generally like red wine, dry but not too dry.

If you just want a nice red wine to sit down with and sip over conversation a french beaujolais or an italian valpolicella would suffice to begin with. Neither are harsh or typically high in tannins (a type of acid associated with reds). Wines are basically broken down into year, region and grape(s). (some are blended). Now for a beer.......

One of the most important things to know about wine is that it comes in different colours. and bottles.
Actually one of the most knowledgeable winers on this forum is Henrik. I think he actually reads the Wine Spectator. Moi-meme, I am more of a Wine Expectorator.
My wife was raving about a bottle of Australian "Billi-billi" something... so I finally found a bottle of it -- $20 a pop.... well this ought to be something... strong notes of kerosene in my opinion (or Opimium).
sour grapes.

Well then, perhaps I will allow Henrik to make a suggestion for a wine with filet mignon.

Cine, I'm not sure where you got the impression from that I am a knowledgable winer, or that I read Wine Spectator! LOL!! I like wine very much, but I am far from a specialist. I tend to prefer non-French wines, but that is is really due to the value for money aspect. If money is not an issue, French wines are indeed outstanding. Recently I have begun to buy mostly Chilean wines, as they are improving their wine making skills. Having probably the best natural wine growing area in the world, it has been their wine making skills that lacked previously. Other than that I like South African wines that I tend to find superior to Australian ones, both sold for roughly the same price here. Californian wines are very good, but their prices have gone up too much. Then there are Spanish wines, where you can still find some truly amazing ones. But French, and more and more Italian wines have become too expensive for me. What would I suggest for a filet mignon? I suppose a good pinot noir would be just about right, and there you can go with either a French or a Californian. The pinot noir is a wine that is soft on tannin (important factor as da Silva pointed out!). Otherwise, try a South African Shiraz, not a French Syrah which does have the same grape as origin though. The South African Shiraz is one of my personal favourites, and really goes well with any lighter food such as chicken or a filet mignon. Now can I have a beer?

I, personally have always had a taste for the German wines... but I usually refrain from saying so because I always get a barrage of replies saying German wine is sewage!!!
But really- I like German wines and I'm not afraid to admit it! Nothing better than a Riesling in my book!
If we're talking about sparkling wines, then the Italian Asti is my friend- personally the taste is better than the French Champagnes I've drank.

You guys are so full of it! What on earth makes you think that women like wine? LOL!!! Alex, I resent your assumption that "educated people are supposed to know about these things (wine)" - I AM VERY EDUCATED and I absolutely DISlike wine with a passion - taste and smell....yuk, yuk, yuk. ...I'll have water or pepsi please....

hehehe greg i did not mean to offend anyone with the educated people thing. take it with a grain of salt and pepper, maybe i phrased it badly. LOL whine however is my favorite since i grew up with it. i must have had my first glass of wine when i was 5. lol we have a lot of grapes in the back yard in romania, enough to make roughly 300-350 liters in a good year. after that comes the romanian "plums" juice. kinda like the hungarian palinca or whatever they call it. very strong stuff. i had the first glass wheni was 10 maybe. it literaly takes your breath away. as for soft drink i must say i'm a coke man myself, pepsi just tates really bad expecially with my brand of cigarettes. mineral water is good and very refreshing after 2-3 hours of tenis.

Strange... I migrated to Diet soft drinks a while back (drinking calories seems a waste of calories to me!)... at first, I thought the non-diet stuff was better, but the diet was OK... Now I've got used to diet- I can't stand the taste of non-diet cola... non-diet cola is so sweet and icky... Thus: Coke and Pepsi are both out for me (unless diet)... but I always was a Dr Pepper man anyway... Dr Pepper, the one consumable product Texas makes well!!!! (although it is a subsidiary of Cadbury-Schwepps's, an English company, so maybe thats why it tastes good!)

Re: Alexmd about wine and german beer.
Well about wine, dunno not my favorite drink...
But about beer: Yes! I can clearly agree with you. I mean here in Italy there is nothing like good beer. Ok, you can buy Becks in bottles but you will pay 4 Euro for one!!! The italian beer is not very recommandable, so I stick here to juice or Water or Coke. Well but I'm really looking forward to getting back to Germany and drinking some nice beer.
BTW: I can see you have been to Munich. I absolutely adore that city!!! I lived there for three months in summer when I had my placement at BMW in the centre of research and development. It's such a wonderfull city. Have you ever been to the Kunstpark Ost? The old Pfanni-factory where they established about 25 clubs in one big area? It's really cool. Or have you ever been to the English Garden? Adoreable. Yeah so btw: were are you from and where do you live? Cheers,

mmmm german beer! they had this thing they called weissbeer i think... that was unbelieveable but also made me to 205lbs lol i was in munich 1 day so i din't get to see much. most of the time i was in nurenberg. and in the end it started raining too so everyone was soaked because we parked far. i told my friends that next time i'm bringing my car. lol it was nice, i liked it but i don't think i could live there. i had a feeling that everything was cramped and jumbled toghether. lol there's a lot more space here i can tell you that. i'm Romanian by birth and moved to Canada about 6 years ago. Thus the two flags at the bottom. it can get really cold in winter here (actually it's stinking snowing right now) but i love it none the less. the summer is super around here.
