I believe this is my post #501 – what do you know!! On this glorious day of August 19th, 2002, I have just become Shamu Incarnate, joining an exclusive club of lucky few AND have become the first woman in history to do so.
Talking about woman – we have never discussed the sex of Shamu. By that I mean is it a male or a female? To have been able to attract so many quality people here, I can only believe Shamu is a female. Any thoughts?
Women Rule! Thank you Lady Shamu!

Hey Greg99! Welcome to the incarnate club! Judging by your post, I can only assume that you are therefore the first REAL Shamu incarnate. I think it was previous believed that Shamu was a he, but your revelation could explain her famous "bitch" slaps over in the old monster...SLAP SLAP SLAP!!

Wuff, I hate to guess, but that's what I'm doing...LOL...however, I seem to recall that Shamu was actually a female killer whale. The original. Or maybe that was Willy, from Free Willy? LOL.
When I went last month, they had two, one male & one female. I forget the male's name, but the female was called Nanu!
Oh well, I guess i didn't really answer THIS question, huh? LOL
I have to agree with greg99 on this one tough...my money is on: FEMALE...for her reason. Only a female could attract such quality people...LOL! (OK, am I learning...greg99?? dani??..am I getting better?)
LOL, I know I dug a deeeeeeeeep hole with dani & the buss comment. Honest, it was only a joke, really...seriously...just a joke...I swear, I swear...I beg for mercy oh great Queen of Queens (with exception of you greg99), please forgive my poor taste in humour.
Humbly begging...no, more like grovelling, RacerX ;D

Congrats Greg99- great to see you up in our- oh-so- elite group... And you joined us months after conception- this makes it even more of an honour... Have a Beer... errmmm no have a Pepsi that looks like a beer (I almost forgot you don't like beer)... (frothy head looks like someone shook the can too much)... In regards to Shamu's sex- Can the great Shamu really have a sex- surely Shamu is above being of one sex- Shamu is all things everywhere- therefore I believe Shamu is a hemaphrodite.

I think Shamu should have a definite sex. Otherwise it would have to reproduce by mitosis like most bacteria, and Shamu is no bacteria.

Until I read Pabs post I was seduced by Wycco's theory.......Shamu an hermaphrodite, what a concept indeed. But then again, comparing Shamu to a snail........naaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh, doesn't cut it.
And a bacteria - ABSOLUTELY NOT - a virus maybe, but not a bacteria.

Definitely a virus...LOL, but no bacteria, and surely no snail...LOL!
On the other hand, Wycco does have a point, Shamu is all things & above sexes...Oh, Oh, hey greg99...did you say seduced? Cool...
LOL, RacerX

Let the Sermon begin,
As we are all high priests in the religion of Shamuism we should all know that as an omnipotent god Shamu is indeed genderless. Any attempts to try to assign a gender is futile and may incurr the wrath of the great one. I here offer my prayers of subordination to our great all knowing Shamu and ask for forgiveness for my fellow Shamuists.

In the name of the Father Shamu the Son Takagi and the Holly Water in which they both bathe
I humbly kneel before You, Oh Great One, and beg for your forgiveness.

You're right TC, but the sex is yet to be determined and they haven't named it yet. Funny though that the mother's name is Takara - almost Takagi. Maybe we should send Seaworld a list of names and ask them if we could all be the official godfathers of the newborn (Wycco - in this case, how about dropping the "croaks...") SEAWORLD SAN DIEGO PROUDLY ANNOUNCES THE PARK'S FIRST GRANDBABY SHAMU
SAN DIEGO (May 6, 2002) -- SeaWorld San Diego's first Grandbaby Shamu and the world's second killer whale conceived through artificial insemination was born Friday, May 3 at 8:30 p.m. Takara, a 10-year-old killer whale, gave birth to a healthy-looking calf at Shamu Stadium under the watchful eyes of SeaWorld's zoological team members.
"We are very excited about the birth of this calf," said Mike Scarpuzzi, vice president of zoological operations. "The celebration of our park's first grandbaby and the second successful calf through artificial insemination is a great reflection of the outstanding work performed by our zoological team members. It is the dedication to their work and the special relationship and positive training techniques they have perfected with the animals that have enabled SeaWorld San Diego to reach this milestone birth."
After an 18-month gestation, Takara's calf, estimated to weigh between 300 and 350 pounds and measure between 6 to 7 feet, was born in Shamu Stadium's main show pool following a two-hour labor. Moments later, the baby whale instinctively swam to the water's surface to take its first breath. The park's zoological team members report the mother and baby appear to be healthy, but as with any newborn, the first few days are critical. The calf's sex is yet to be determined.
This is Takara's first calf and the fourth successful killer whale birth at SeaWorld San Diego. The most recent birth was Sept. 1, 2001, when Kasatka, a 25-year-old, and also Takara's mother, gave birth to Nakai, the world's first killer whale born through artificial insemination. During the birth, Kasatka and Nakai were at Takara's side.
"The mother and baby appear to be doing very well and our initial observations indicate this is a strong, healthy calf," said Scarpuzzi. "As with any newborn, the first few days are critical. We're looking forward to the continued bonding of mom and calf and to the baby beginning to nurse."
Takara was impregnated November 2000 with sperm from a killer whale from SeaWorld Orlando. The successful procedure is the result of 12 years of research by Dr. Todd Robeck, corporate director of theriogenology, based at SeaWorld San Antonio. While killer whales are not an endangered species, the techniques and knowledge gained from this advancement have the potential to be applied to other cetaceans.
For more than 40 years, SeaWorld and Busch Gardens have shared their commitment to conservation with millions of guests, who leave not only with greater appreciation of the natural world, but with the adventure of a lifetime.
Leaders in conservation and education, SeaWorld, Busch Gardens and Discovery Cove care for the largest animal population of any institution in the world and offer an information site especially for students and teachers at www.seaworld.org.
