The detail Ferarri has put into the aero on the underside of that car is amazing. Now they have put "Barge Scales" or possibly "Barge Feathers" to work out a very clean laminar flow around the car's perimeter and into the diffuser.
All of that would have to make for a very effictive diffuser.

eso, I picked up those "secondary" mini-bargeboards also. And just when I wanted to mention these, I noticed you had already created the topic. So no hi-jacking of your post So far I can't really figure out just what their purpose would be. Something else that I noticed were the "gill" type vents on (at least) the right hand side side pod. I could not detect whether they are present on the other side. Would anyone have a close up, side-on pic of the F2003-GA ? I suppose I could look for it myself but maybe someone will spare me the effort. I must say, the McLaren type vents on the Jordan look a bit silly. But they worked for the Macs, so why not for the Jordan.

....those double barge boards on the F2003 GA ....they've gotta be illegal.
....please ....somebody tell me they're illegal....
....something has to be bloody illegal about that damned car!!!!

IMO Those secondary boards help to keep the air flow moving quickly around the board. If you look closely at the secondary board is it more closely coupled to teh rear of the rpimary than at the front. Ine ffect you have a reducing area therefore a drop in pressure and an increase in speed and velocity of the airflow. This helps reduce pressure drag (Pabs what the correct term?) ie the drag created by having to penetrate the airflow (same as the wave that a ships hull has tomove forward when under sail.
There are a host of tricks to improve teh efficiency ofth deivce but essentially I think this is it's primary purpose.
As for the vent on the right hand side pods, I think they are extra vents for the Oil Cooler which is part of the radiator assembly.

Thanks for the link Ruby2. On Rubitoo's car it is noticable at the top of the Vodafone logo. I'm still looking for one a bit more close up. It's bound to pop up sometime. I'm out of headache tablets so here goes

I am thnking that the name for the "pressure" drag that you mentioned is "parasitic"... but if pabs comes up with another name for it I'll go along with him.

I think you're right but my fluid mechanics is really rusty. To little use

Regarding the 'gills' on the right side of the 2003-GA (see a324.g.akamai.net/f/324/3126/1d/www.f1-live.com/photos/2003/barcelona/diapo_043.jpg), I read over at Atlas where a viewer heard Steve Matchett on SPEED say that they were for cooling the hydraulics (which are in the vicinity on the right pod). I looked around a bit, and came up with a shot of a left side cover (http://a324.g.akamai.net/f/324/3126/1d/www.f1-live.com/photos/2003/barcelona/diapo_042.jpg) with a couple of gills too. I suspect they tested this pre-race, and decided not to go with it for Q .. .as the cars didn't have left-side gills during the race. CFF

Good stuff CFF...we obviously watch the same channel...LOL! I love listening to Steve Matchett, the guy really seems to know what's up.
Now, if they could just get the other guys to pipe down while he's talking informative stuff...LOL David Hobbs seems to go for the "create excitement" statements, and the main host (forget his name) just hasn't come around like I thought he would...though he's DEFINITELY improved over last year...LOL!
Anyway, I'm straying from the topic. you're right, they're for cooling the hydrolics, and they were present only on the right side of the vehicle.

I think the fella who's name you're looking for is Rick DeBruhl Rx. While agreeing with you that he's not as bad as last year, luckily for me the other available Canadian F1 feed (from our version of ESPN .... TSN) switched after the first race of the year back to the ITV feed with Martin Brundle & James Allan. So .... we get them both ... and can flip channels during commercial breaks ...
TSN has for a couple of years used ITV commentary, but switched to SPEED for 2003. There was an incredible outpouring of dissatisfaction, and in a highly unusual move, they announced they were dropping Speed in favour of ITV!! Score one for the fans !!

As for the vent on the right hand side pods, I think they are extra vents for the Oil Cooler which is part of the radiator assembly. So mr Machett agrees with me. Gearbox and hydraulic system use the same oil supply.

Sorry guys, I hadn't read this thread until today. Thos barge boards look really cool.
I've changed my mind on my earlier post. I think Raptor is in fact refering to pressure drag, which would be consistent with the shape of the boards as the pressure decrease from the front to the back would be more gradual. Not too sure about parasitic drag though because adding surface area usually results in an increase in parasitic drag.
Also, good call on the vents on the side pods. I hadn't seen those before.

Just so you all know Steve Matchett was a mechanic on the Benneton during the Schumel years. He ended up hurting his back which sidelined him and so he wrote a book which evolved into his becoming a commentator. The use of oil for both tranny and hydraulics is nothing new, Lotus did the same on their 1987 active suspension car.

You might hate that Ferrari has come up with these new barge boards and gills, but it makes for a pretty car. I thought the McL was the best looking with the rear wing, but now the G.A. is tits with all this crap on it.
I wonder what the new McL will have for us. There rear wing is cool. I wonder if the rest of the car is like that.
