OK, this is from the owner of Proboards explaining why we are getting so many popup ads:
Everyone,
It has come to my attention that a lot of you right now are up in arms over the recent addition of popunders that do not stay in the same window.
Firstly: All ads should always pop under - never over. I do not have control over them staying in the same window or not.
Secondly: We have a situation with our Web host right now. Due to some complaints, they have threatened to shut down some of our servers. This means your board could go offline in an instant if our Web host decides to turn off a server. We may have to change hosts.
The cost for us to change to a new Web host will be approximately $5,000. This money does not come from thin air. Contrary to popular belief, I am not independently rich and I am not able to do this on a whim. I pay out of my pocket $3,500 each month to keep ProBoards up and running. This includes paying Craig to provide you fantastic support and the over 20 servers that we have hosted at RackShack.net.
Now, I have tried my best over the past to keep the number of ads to a minimum. For over a year now we have kept the popunders in a single window, along with a banner ad at the top, and a text link at the bottom of the page.
Now we are definitly in a situation where we are going to need to change Web hosts. The $5,000 that we need isn't going to just magically appear in my hand so that I can make everything better.
Recently a company came to us offering to help sell our ad inventory for us, which we accepted. This company does popunders, and pays better than our other advertisers. Yes, the popunders come up in separate windows - but they do pop-under. You can ignore them until you are done with your browsing session if you so choose. They are not going to eat you up alive.
We need these ads to be able to move to a new host where we are not going to be threatened with eviction.
I'm sorry if you feel this ads are intrusive. Do you think I like them any more than you do? They are a necessity right now. If you want your ProBoard to randomly disappear one day because our Web host got a complaint about another board on your server, then maybe we should just go back to the 1 ad window format. But if you want to have a reliable service, then we need to make this move. It is going to take some time to make the money we need to move, but I guarantee you it is a necessity for ProBoards at this point in time.
