Isn't that what the team forums are for?

Indeed- if you wish to only share tips and tricks with your team- the team forum can be used for that.
This thread has actually been requested by a couple of people.
The goal of it is to help newcomers to FPOTM, who perhaps arn't quite up to speed yet, and are perhaps not in teams- or strong teams yet- catch up and be competative.
I'm sure you all have tips and tricks that you may keep secret within your teams... You're welcome to keep them secret inside you team. Noone is obligated to share their team-secrets.
I'm also sure I don't know all the best tips n' tricks- Especially since most of you have more experience than me- but it should help the newcomers out if I post a few suggestions.

There are two basic stratergies to FPOTM.
1) The Precision Shot 2) Running Blind
The Precision Shot is the most accurate method- so I'll go over it first.
What you need for the precision shot is a watch or stop watch that keeps time well without "losing" seconds.
The first thing you need to do is calibrate your watch to the clock on FPOTM.
As a new hour dawns on FPOTM- goto the home page of FPOTM www27.brinkster.com/fpotm/index.asp (The Home Page is the quickest page to refresh that shows the time- thus gives a more acurate time-portrayal)
Have your watch ready to reset in one hand- and with the other keep clicking "refresh" until the hour changes and the minutes read "00". (click refresh everytime you see the time appear- but not before)- once the minutes read "00" set your stopwatch in motion- or reset the time on your watch... (I find Digital works better than analog for this kind of task)
At this point your clock/watch is probably a second or two slow. What you need to do is find out HOW slow it is.
Goto the FPOTM forum www27.brinkster.com/fpotm/forum2.asp and click on the link that says "post new message". From here- use the process of elimination to determine how slow your watch is...
First start off by clicking "Post" message when the seconds read "00" on your watch... On the forum- what does the minutes read? Is it what you expected? If yes- try again, although this time try clicking post 1 second too early, 2 secs too early, etc...etc....etc until on the forum the minute reads as being earlier than the minute you were targeting.
By doing this you should be able to get FPOTM down to the second!
* Note. DO use a reliable clock/watch- If you watch gains or loses seconds often- it will throw your timing off- and at that point it is time to recalibrate.
* Note. DO take advantage of the 2nd to last day of the month- on this day there is Free testing- all posts show how many seconds off you were from hitting a target minute.
* Note. If you calibrate your clock at a time of peak internet useage- and FPOTM for you comes at a time when internet useage is low in your area- your post will come in late- if the situation is reversed your post will come in early. Best time to calibrate your clock is as close to FPOTD (first post of the day) as possible.
* Note. Faster internet connections tend to be more stable- and will have less variance in performance and less susceptable to internet traffic fluctuations... Thus your time will be more often right on target.
* Note. You can't always win or get a podium- There are 10 highly competative members to FPOTM- simple math reads 10 does not fit into 3 spots easily.
* Tip. Try having a test practice with a team mate- agree to a minute with that person- and both try getting to be the first person to post in that minute- retry at 5 minute intervals until you get the hang of it.
- Sometimes you don't have a chance to set a clock up before a FPOTM event and are in essence Running Blind. There are methods to doing well whilst running blind. I average between 1 and 2 secs off perfect when running blind- next I'll give hints on how to improve your performance when running blind!

Incidentally...
*NEVER* Write a post to FPOTM with the following in the message, verbatim:
"%USER% smells like fish- as do all people who compete for team %TEAM%"
Other Phrases to avoid:
"I have %USERID% number of testicles." "I think we need to nuke %COUNTRY%."
And also...
avoid writing:
"%Password%" anywhere in your message- you'll make people paranoid!
