Oh dear,
what a mess this is. 100 candidates for governor- and whoever gets the most votes wins... even if they only end up with 10 or 15% of the overall vote.
This whole "recall" issue strikes me as counter-intuitive. This opens the flood gates, so that any time an incumbant's popularity drops below 50% for a miniscule amount of time- the opposition can demand a "recall".
I've already heard that one group of democrats are already planning the next recall incase Davis doesn't get the 50% vote he needs to keep his seat...
Incidentally- MSN said it best- The governor could lose the referendum to have a recall by only getting 49% for him- yet have his position taken by someone who only get 15% of the vote!
California could start changing premiers faster than Argentina if this continues!
And who is #1 seed to take the governers mansion... It wouldn't be old Arnold would it? The man who has had more sexual harrasment suits filed against him than Bill Clinton- and has not yet given any indication as to where he stands on any issue.
Looks like the terminator is going to get elected without having to say what he stands for.
He is running as a Republican (band-wagon perhaps... Republican's are the "in" party)- but his wife is related to the Kennedy's (very leftish Democrats).

I wondered when someone would mention this.
Ol Arnold has been a republican for a very long time. It is sad what is happening in Cali, but they deserve it. The current gov "Grey-out Davis" has led that state into financial ruin. The deficit this year is bigger than thier annual budget, and their deficit is bigger than all 49 states combined!!! He has raised taxes so much that companies are leaving, and he continues to do the wrong thing just to get votes.
The democrats have been in power for so long there that the place is now a joke. Some days i wish it would just fall into the ocean, and other times we should just give it back to mexico.
Recently i think grey-out davis was going after the power companies who charged high prices during thier blackout period. Well, that is his fault. If he would have built powerplants they wouldn't have to suffer by buying out of state power at high price.
I have no sympathy for ol Cali, and i think they deserve it. Now they have Universities closing early, parks are closing, and a ton of other things have been cut becuase they can't handle business. Why, becuase we have other programs like prop 186(whatever it is) that gives illegal immigrants drivers health care and schooling!
Why do i have to pay for an illegal non citizen who doesn't pay taxes education!!! this is a joke. They should ship them back to wherever they are from and let them come back when they properly immigrate to the USA. It is not fair that a Mexican man who goes through all the hoops to immigrate, can't come becuase someone wants to jump the border illegally and take their spot. What is worse is that the Democrats now want to give the illegals drivers liscences!!! Burn cali burn is what i got to say.
Hopefully Ol Arnold will just slash the hell out of mess davis has made. Lord knows he can't do any worse.

What scares me is that this mess is going on in what is essentially the worlds 5th biggest economy!!

The old saying "You get the Government you deserve" rings true. TC your comments on the fiscal problems faced by California are true, have you by any chance studied the rest of the American economy since Bush took over?

Despite thinking the recall is a sham...
On further investigation- I agree with most of what Arnold says.
He is fiscally right wing- yet he has qualities from the moderate-left such as pro-human rights, pro-gun control, etc...etc...etc...
He seems to be a moderate, nice to see. Shame he isn't running on an independent ticket, he is the perfect candidate to be an independent.
Lets see if he has the muscle to carry it out.

Danny some of the Fiscal crap In washington does need attention. However, Davis just took spending to a new level, then blames it on everyone else.

Mr Schwarzenegger is a very intelligent man in terms of economics, he and his partner Franco Columbo were multi-millionaries before his breakout as a movie "star". Now with the influence of the Kennedy clan I believe he just might have a chance to wrestle some power away from the extreme right-wing of that party as represented by George Bush the Younger. Geez a moderate Republican, here's hoping he wins and is able to do something with the mess created by Davis, Ken Lay(former CEO Enron) and the rest of the corrupt and unregulated business(thanks to the republicans) leaders. Seems he has a good start already. Warren Buffet on his team wow By Mark Z. Barabak and Michael Finnegan LOS ANGELES TIMES August 14, 2003 Los Angeles - A week after entering the race for California governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger already has shaken up his campaign team, turning day-to-day operations over to aides who ran the office of California's last Republican governor, Pete Wilson. The moves reflect both a scramble to assemble a campaign on the fly after the actor's surprise decision last Wednesday to run in the Oct. 7 recall - and increased assertiveness on the part of his wife, TV reporter Maria Shriver, who has assumed a central role, according to Republican operatives. Billionaire investor Warren Buffett also has joined the campaign as senior financial and economic adviser, and will set up a team of business leaders and economists to examine the state's financial problems. for Arnold a Republican with a different moral code

This is my own analogy:
Imagine the economy being like a large car that either moves forward when its doing well or it moves backward when its doing bad.
The president or governor through their policies and tax cuts can affect the cars movement. If the car is standing still, a few smart decisions can move it forward a bit. Inversely a few dumb laws, and it could move slightly back.
But if the car is moving backward with a bit of momentum, then no matter what decisions the president makes, he cannot apply enough force to stop it and reverse direction. In the same manner, if the car is moving forward, the right decisions might make it move a bit faster and the wrong ones might make it go a bit slower, but thats about as much as he can do.
If a '72 Buick is rolling down a hill, even a couple linebackers wont be able to stop it.
It never ceases to amaze me just how naive humans can be. They really do believe that their life will improve significantly if their candidate gets elected. And of course they blame the president when the economy is shitty.
In the end, what really DOES improve the economy is confidence in the leaders. The Prez may be a genius, but if he comes accross as an idiot, people will keep their money in the bank instead of buying the new Frigidaire or the new Buick.
For all his faults, (and I never liked him) nobody doubted that Clinton was a very smart guy, and no matter his policy on taxing and interest rates, the economy flourished (albeit on the unfounded shoulders of plenty of dot-coms) because people trusted his leadership.
"Would you let your daughter intern in the Whitehouse?" No. "Would you trust Clinton with chauffering the entire US of A?" Yes.

California: I think its pretty cool the way they subsidize the hybrid vehicles cost. My heart belongs to German V8's and Flat-Sixes, but I have to admit those 65 mpg cars would be pretty cool during a gas crisis.

Clinton: would i vote for him, Hell no!!! His foriegn policy was a joke, and the economy was not his making. The Economy is bigger than one man, and the economy runs in cycles. Clinton just got wind of dot coms, and most of all over seas trade agreements that really boosted the economy. BTW- most of the agreements came from Bush sr, and Ronald Reagan. The economy was actaully climbing while Bush sr was in office, and it sank with Bill clinton in it. Dubya just inherited a weak economy, but that is OK since hte economy is now back on a roll and growing.
As for ol Cali, the place is a joke beyond all help. The LA Times poll (very left paper) quotes Booze Cruisetamonte ahead in the pools by a ton. Well these people had Grey davis winning the last election in double digits too.
What is worse is that Bustamonte is a member of a organization that wants California to succeed from the USA, and join back with Mexico!!!! So if they elect this retard they will have BIG problems. Hell this guy is running on a ticket that says he wants to raise the property taxes, and business taxes. Both are exactly why they are big reason why they are in the mess they are in right now.
Dirty politics is also coming in. The dems are attacking Arnold by calling his dad a NAZI!! they have this info about his dad and are trying to use it to hurt Arnold. Man you got to be one sick SOB to accuse that guy to be a Jew killer. Maybe his dad did some time with the NAzis, but many people back then had to to survive, especially in Austria and germany.

Actually his dad signed up to be an S.A., the infamous brown shirts.
There is no "maybe" about it: Arnold's dad was a racist killer.
That being said, Arnold is OK...pro-choice, pro-gun control...his wife is probably telling him what to say...

S.A.? i never knew much of them. All I know about is the S.S..
It is sad though, his dad might of been a racist like you say, but that does not make him one. Same analogy with Al gore's dad. He was against integration, but even a gore hater like myself wouldn't hold that against Al gore.
