Muslim clerics in Iraq have been taking advantage of the political vacuum left by Saddam Hussein to try to impose their own strict version of Islam. Some religious leaders want women to cover up Liquor stores have been attacked and their owners threatened. Women have been told to wear the veil.
And it is not just Iraq's small Christian community that is now worried about its way of life.
One Christian off-licence seller is still selling, but he does not know for how much longer.
Over the past few weeks, several alcohol shops in Baghdad have been attacked.
At least one has been firebombed, another had a rocket-propelled grenade shot through the front window.
Women who don't wear the veil won't be served when they go shopping; taxis won't pick them up and they might have eggs and rotten tomatoes thrown at them
"We are so frightened," the seller says. "They say maybe they will hurt us."
"They" are the radical Shia clerics and the off-licence owner, who is too scared to give his name, is terrified that both his life and his livelihood could now be at risk.
Now, in getting rid of Saddam, it was always a case of geting rid of a dangerous murdurous freak... What if the replacement turns out worst then him ?

A fundamentalist Islamic state like the old Afghanistan would not be nice. One wonders if the US will go in again for a "regime change"

The US already said they are not gonna put up with that crap, and will put a stop to it. Some Clerics huh, they thirst power more than they want people to be nice muslims. Yeah and what are they going to do about it? I cannot fathom why so many people are being taken by suprise by this! The only way the US can stop it is by remaining in occupancy, with military rule. Give an opressed people frredom to follow their beliefs after being persecuted for thirty years because of said beliefs and of course they will persue it with a fervour! I simply cannot believe that the Bush reigeme was stupid enough not to have predicted this!

good education is the need of the hour. smokingun I'm with you there SG. The problem is however, who exactly is to decide on the definition of a "good" education and who the educators are to be. Specially given the condition the state in question is in at the moment. So often an "idealistic" type of education is misconstrued as being "good". The whole Iraq thing reminds me of purifying sewage effluent. You can be sure to remove the turd from the water but, you're always going to have your doubts whether the fart is also gone.

Iraq had the best education system in the region until the US and British led sanctions led to a downfall in back-up material. The crap they teach in Saudi, Kuwait, Qatar, UAE, Bahrain etc. which s all based on knowlage of the Koran. Iraq also had a motivated workforce of people willing to actually work, unlike the wankers in Saudi, Kuwait, Qatar, UAE, Bahrain etc. who want to get paid, whilst sitting on their ass’s and picking their nose and toenails, whilst some expat does their job for them. And America KNEW exactly what would happen when Saddam was overthrown, it is what they want/wanted (how else will they justify staying in Iraq for the next 10+ years). The same as when then plotted the overthrow of the Shah of Iran and the installation of Khomanhi.

Once again I agree with DB. The Americans are not stupid, or I should say ignorant. They knew exactly what would happen once the Baath Party was put out of power.
It's just their planning for post "war" Iraq that may be lacking, but as some one said they intend to stay in Iraq for a long time. Eventually they will sort things out.(I hope)

The same as when then plotted the overthrow of the Shah of Iran and the installation of Khomanhi. And once Khomenhi was in power, they had to encourage Saddam, in order to keep Iran at bay... This is quiet a vicious circle.... s.
