Both.
A great war hero and by todays standards a villain responsible for war crimes.
You cannot judge someone for their actions in one era where the moral standards were different in a new era.
As a hypohetical example, In 200 years time when probably most of the world will be vegetarian and find the killing of animals for our self gratification and consumption reprehensible, will our future grandchildren therefore judge us as barbarian?
Our morals and the worlds morals are defined by the era in which we live. The article is almost 100 years old, in a time of war before the concept of war rules had been written. He did what at the time was right.
Should we judge Ceaser or any other ancient warrior for his actions on the battlefield or accept them within the context of his era?
