I only post this because I remember we here at SC had this conversation about what we'd do when presented with this situation. It was e-mailed to me today, and I couldn't help but laugh...

Well, that's not enough information to answer the question! Is the
man look poor or oppressed? Have I ever done anything to him to
inspire him to attack? Could we run away? What does my wife think?
What about the kids? Could I possibly swing the gun like a club and
knock the knife out of his hand? What does the law say about this
situation? Is it possible he'd be happy with just killing me? Does he
definitely want to kill me or would he just be content to wound me?
If I were to grab his knees and hold on, could my family get away
while he was stabbing me? How will shooting him make me feel?
What would Oprah say? What would Dr. Phil say? This is all so
confusing! I need to debate this with some friends for a few days
to try to come to a conclusion.

This question was raised on a Philly radio call-in show.
Without casting stones, it is a legitimate question.
There are two men, both extremely wealthy.
One develops relatively cheap software and gives billions of
dollars to charity. The other sponsors terrorism.
That being the case, why was it that the Clinton Administration spent more money chasing down Bill Gates over the past eight years than Osama bin Laden?
THINK ABOUT IT!

Whoa-whoa-whoa DeadCat...
I posted these here because they were forwarded to me & read funny.
You don't find it strange that Clinton would spend millions to battle Gates, and only toss a 118 tomahawk cruise missles at Osama?
His solution to Osama only worsened the feelings towards America.
As for placing the value of a life above another....no, it's not that easy.
No offense, but here's how I feel about this:
On the surface, some of Osama's buddies came to this country and their only intent was to kill Americans.
These so called "people" intentionally killed INNOCENT civillians, working to make a living. Real "people" no better than anyone else, just working & going about their life.
At this point, the so called "people" who planned & intentionally murdered innocent men, women & children are no longer valued as equals. In my simple opinion, these so called "people" have given up their rights to being a part of the Human race. Does this make me a bad person...maybe. I try to be forgiving...but with people like Osama, or Saddam...wuff.
As for the innocent civillians in Afghanistan, and the rest of the world...it IS a tragedy. I think we both agree that war is a terrible thing. We should do everything in our power to see that they (the people of Afghanistan...or any other country) are supported with necesities, to rebuild their country into a productive country of this world.
If my neighbor refuses to put aside his differences, and continues to punch me in the nose every time I step outside, and finally he comes to my house, enters my house & pops me in the nose....then yes, I will stoop to his terms and pop him back. Figuring it's the only thing he'll understand. Two theories here: Punch him to get his attention & maybe he'll prefer to have a reasonable discussion....OR Beat his arse so bad, he's affraid to even think about coming back.
I think this country has learned a few tough lessons and will probably choose the later. No, that doesn't make it right...once again, it's like the lessor of two evils: neither are right, in my opinion...
Anyway, I'm going alooooong way to try to explain that NO, I don't value one life over that of another because of where they're from...MY country or not. If you met my kids, you'd understand that...LOL; Spain, French, Texan, and who knows what all mixed in....LOL!

Other things that make you go hmmmm: Bush now has a weekly military budget larger then the US's annual helthcare budget. And this is not counting Irak...When it is 52 times more important to kill other people then the heal your own, that should REALLY make you go hmmmm.... After years of balanced democrat budget, Republican Bush JR. will give the US it's biggest defficit in history...hmmmm. An ex-coke addict is leading the war against drugs....hmmmm The biggest arms dealer in the middle east before france and germany for the last 20 years, the US who want to take out saddam...hmmmm... Where is the largest execution per capita ratio after china and in front of IRAN, peace loving US...hmmmmm.... Where is the largest official count in membership of white supremacy groups, equality loving US .....hmmmm.... Where did the guy who got the most popular vote not elected president in favor of the son of an ex-president...democracy loving us. Who went to the WTO to sue governments making cheaper AIDS drugs...the richest country in the world, our brotherly neighbour the US...hmmmmm.... What country refuse to ban land mind although it kills thousands of kids a year? China and the US...hmmmm... While 1 australian in 4 will get a skin cancer in his life time, who refuse to sign Kyoto, the US...hmmmm and so on, and so forth.... |

DeadCat, Agreed. Once someone's reason for living is only to take anothers life because they don't think like they do, then yes I do consider them unequal. They need to be educated, or delt with accordingly...some believing that means they need to meet their maker.
I prefer to educate over sending them to their maker, feeling that the latter would just cause more hate. Wuff, what do you do?

Wuff, I'd guess (just guessing here...) that it's maybe becuase they (the powers that be) deem our country a "fair & Just" country, thus we can judge our own. (This would be a pretty arrogant concept.)
Not leaving the fate of our people in the hands of the one's whom might be tainted against Americans?
I mean take a look at the UN, it seems they're main goal is to pilvage America & it's resources, and spread them evenly through-out the world. (This is a real perception here.)
Or, look at Nelson Mandella...there are many here, whom believe that he'd still be rotting in a jail, if it weren't for the U.S., but then he speaks terribly of the very country that helped get him free.
East Germany is pretty much free today, because of U.S. Presidents like Reagan, whom stood up to Communist Russia...
The wall came down. From where I sit, this is a good thing, no? These same people seem to be forgetting today, just who was the force that expedited that wall to come down. Last I heard, half the people in Germany are against the U.S. today, some referring to Bush as a Hitler...LOL! Hitler?? Come on...
Would you subject your citizens to "their" trials? Would their trials be fair? Perception is it wouldn't be too fair...
I'm sure even you can admit there are times this country doesn't get a "fair" deal...
Sometimes, DESERVEDLY so, others not so just.
Another problem...this country is forced into the role of "World Policeman"...when someone wants/needs help (see mandella) they usually come to this country for that help...at the grudge of other countries. Now, would those same grudging countries give the US a fair trial...you know the answer to that as well as I do.
I'm not saying all the hatred towards the U.S. is UNJUST...I'm NOT saying that at all, but I am saying some of it is unfair, and if this happened in just one case, it'd be one case too many. Does it happen to other countries...I'm sure it does, and it too is just as unfair and unjust...but this country happens to be in a position to do something about it. Arrogant, possibly. Fact, yes.

(This would be a pretty arrogant concept.) yes it is very very arrogant, prejudiced and chauvinistic to say the least. and what prevents countries like the UK, Australia, France, and yes even India from judging it's own? we are all democracies commited to freedom and human rights? why does the US insist on the right to hold other accountable but not itself? "fair and just" america may be, but to be able to judge also requires wisdom. the first two qualities that you mention would be useless without the wisdom to choose. wouldn't you agree. it was fair and just to rid the afghans of the communists. personally i feel that afghan citizens had a good quality of life under Najibullah and his soviet backers as they developed infrastructure, bridges, schools hospitals and the like, women had equal rights and so on. but let us assume that america was fair and just. could you honestly say that creating, motivating, training and arming Osama to do it was wise??? hmmm |
