dont you guys agree that vegetables taste better than fried crap? give me a steak.... Yes especially bovine vegetable... This is a very interesting thread.... I find it very revealing no-one is mentionning booze (BEER) as the ultimate calory builder.... Some things are better left unsaid s.

Henrik, Actually I drink a lot more tea and coffee than soda myself... the soda is just an occasional thing. Personally, I can drink plain water whilst eating dinner- but elsewise I can't stand plain water... thus, I drink tea and coffee mainly! Re: Why American's drink so much Soda- 2 reasons... 1) It's a cultural thing- a)everyone else does- people see everyone else just drinking soda, so they do too... b) America is a here and now society- they want to grab a can, open it and drink... they don't want the hassle of filling a cup! 2) It's the most readily available. Many American's drink coffee or Iced tea... but beyond that- the only think readily available is soda. Sure there are fruit juices- but they cost much more than soda. America doesn't have what we would call in England, a "fruit squash"... In England everyone would drink squash when I was growing up... healthier- and better tasting than soda... but just not (readily) available in the US. BTW- FYI - a squash is made from a concentrate of fruit juices that you get a 1 litre bottle... your put a dash of squash in a cup and fill the rest with water... the bottle costs about the same as a soda 2-litre but lasts MUCH longer... and never goes flat. Re: Drink Sizes, The cups are so large in the US because they are full of ice... 80% of the cup's contents is ice unless you ask for- "no ice" Srrh, Re: Beer: Beer and alcohol in general I save as a treat for myself... there is not much I love more than a nice Boddington's, but the calories are insane so I rarely drink it... Light beer to me tastes like crap! JWK, Re: Eat alot- gain no weight. I had a friend in high-school with the problem that she was too thin. She couldn't gain weight... she was constantly trying to gain weight, but no matter what she ate she stayed pencil thin.

hehehe fat! now that's something that concerns me deeply. i'm 5'10'' and 197 lbs. i used to be 168 lbs. main factors contributing to me being over weight: 1. food, and i don't eat cuz i'm depressed. say i have a snack. finish that and i get hungry. away we go. 2. work, i sit on my ass all day in front of a screen. not much exercising there. 3. work, when i get home i work some more. so work is bad for me. i should quit. lol (see, this explains why i don't post that much too.) 4. beer? i have a couple every weekend, but sometimes i'm too busy to even go out for drinks for a couple of weeks.
i don't eat sweet, i drink sodas but not excesively. i much rather have mineral water. hope i don't get kidney stones.

the biggest kept secret is the sure fire link between "sodas" and obesity. it's funny that the worlds biggest product is the worst thing for you. i am sure that there is a link between coca-cola and no-one barking about it.
i think soft drinks (sodas) and cigarettes are in the same boat. they are both just as bad for you.
Fruit squash? in austrlia we have cordial. is that the same thing?

Although, as an Anglo-American I think of Cordial as something Alcoholic. I'm not well versed in Australian terminology.

Wycco yeah, we have squash in the uk, flavours like apple and blackcurrant, orange, etc. However, they have a high sugar content, plus they also contain aspartme, which I understand is banned in the US, because of its possible links to cancer. So, instead of that, I buy something called a high juice squash, which does not have aspartme, and contains a lot more fruit juice than ordinary squash, as well as just sugar, and not sugar plus artificial sweeteners!! At the end of the day though, I mostly just give my son water or milk, as both are a lot easier on the teeth! I made a rule not to give him any fizzy drinks at all for the first years of his life, with the result that when he did try one, he didn't like it, and still doesn't! I call that a great result!

Ahhh Ruby2,
The beauty of living in God's own country is a splendid thing.
If I want orange/lemon juice I just walk to the back of my yard and pluck a few off the tree and hey presto I have juice. If I want fresh eggs I harrass the next door neighbour. If I want grapes I walk to the end of the block and pick them off the side of the road.
Indeed, here in Australia we have fruit and vegetables that do not come out of a can!!!!??
One of the little advantages of living in paradise.
cheers rick1776

Fruit squash? in austrlia we have cordial. is that the same thing? lime cordial?? it is almost the same. just a bit more sour, and is generally used to make an alchoholic cocktail. i much prefer juices myself, we get over here a certain brand that has this very addictive mixed fruit juice and the juice from another fruit that we call "litchee" over here. it is mindblowing!! the company name is Dabur and the brand is called "Real" wycco, see if you can get hold of the mixed fruit and litchee flavours of this brand in that shop from where you got thumbs-up from. keep the lichee necter in the fridge and sip it when it is cold. sit down when you are doing this and feel yourself drift to the heavens rick, we also get a brand of apple juice called "Harvey" , its supposed to be 100% Australian, and it's ok. apple juice tastes like medicine to me, but it's supposed to be good for me, so i drink a glass of that stuff every 2-3 days. smokingun

Actually, it is legal here... although, yes, it has been linked to cancer and birth-defects. Smokingun, I'll have a look for that next time I'm in Atlanta. I'm always willing to try new things.

Ahhh Ruby2, The beauty of living in God's own country is a splendid thing. If I want orange/lemon juice I just walk to the back of my yard and pluck a few off the tree and hey presto I have juice. I'm working on that... cherry trees, grape vines, all different types of apples and plums, strawberry vines + lots of different herbs, onions, etc... Each year I plant some new fruit trees- Next year I'm going for some peach trees I think... We're in the perfect spot for Peach trees- more peaches per acre are farmed here than anywhere else... I've only been in my house 2 years so the trees arn't too mature yet... I expect next year to start reaping the rewards- this year the yield has been fairly weak for the plums and apples...started off with LOTS- but the storms we've been having have murdered the baby apples and plums! Nothing beats home grown strawberries though... I've got some "Ozarks" growing at home- they don't get too big- and inch in diameter max... but boy they knock the socks off any store-brought strawberries! I'm too the point now, where non-home grown strawberries taste bad to me.
