just wondering, if you had to choose one of the above stances, which would it be?
Myself, as an artist in training, i think i chose live to work.

Hmmmm.... a little of both for me..... I love what I do -- its very rewarding personally, if not wildly financially rewarding. I have changed pursuits a number of times... started out as an Electrical Engineer... but migrated into Television, then television production, and now I work in the technical section of cinema -- I am an electronic film timer, which means that I am responsible for keeping the "look" of a project in keeping with the wishes of the producers (director of photography, et al.) That is not always easy, given a project may be shot over a long period of time under continuously varying conditions. On the other hand, I do work on a lot of music videos, and the challenge there is to come up with a variety of film treatments that keep an audience with an extremely low tedium threshold entertained! However, think about this... I'm the guy with the 35mm negative in the gate who gets to examine every frame of those luscious fluff-babes that music stars seem to have in all their work. A day without a set of 38-D's is like a day without sunshine.... sigh..... Maybe I mostly live to work.... OO [Cine]< /\ / \

I'm afraid I don't have a straight answer either, its a matter of perspective realy
Most of the times I see me killing myself at work in order to make a living, but that can also be seen as my live being devoted to work alone, so I pretty much live working.
However (and boy I like this however!); you asked what would I choose... so it becomes time to be careless greedy and (to some degree) perverted -hey! just like me- and I choose live to work, at the end, it will be more than gratifying.

My viewpoint:
Is that the best way to live is to be happy...
What emotion is better than happyness? What is better than a state of happyness? Don't say Love- because thats only good if it makes you happy...
So my viewpoint has to be- work to live... because living to work DOESN'T make me happy...
Living to work would NOT make me happy (if I were a gigolo things might be different)!

I manage other people's industrial garbage... Who in his right mind would live to do that? I work to live...not to say survive...

I think it all comes down to perspective as someone mentioned. I live to work because I enjoy what I do, and because I think it has a positive impact in society. And like I said, it simply is too damn interesting. Sometimes I find myself working overtime just because I become so...I don't even know what word I am looking for...entangled, I guess, in what I do.
Do I have a social life? Somehow I still manage to have one.
Would I like to have more fun, more free time? Sometimes I do, sometimes what I do IS fun itself.
Don't get me wrong, sometimes I get frustrated with myself, my bosses, and my work. The rewards are few and far between, but they outweigh (at least so far) all the effort that I put in.
My girlfriend would tell you that she hates the fact that I am in love with my work. She says that I put work, soccer, and F1 ahead of her ;D This is not necessarily true as I love them all in different ways ;D (She'll also tell you she hates it when I say that).
But hey, to each his own I guess.
