Wow...
So its all over the news the last few days... Scientists can now remotely control rats.
It works by triggering pleasure zones in the rats brain when they act as instructed.
They plan to use the rats to discover hidden bodies- find mines in mine fields and all sorts of other good things.
But isn't it just a little cruel? And moreso- scary- Are rats just the beginning? Being able to excite animals pleasure zones has been possible for years- I remember reading reports from a decade ago- where they wired monkeys up (I think it was monkeys)- anyhow they had a button in the cage that the monkey could press to get "Pleasured"- the animal kept pressing the button- at the expense of not eating or doing other things...
It became like a drug. I'm sure the affects on the Rats are the same.
Naturally humans have will power- and PROBABLY would be able to resist. (although based on all the drug addicts not neccessarily so).
Could this be used as a future "1984" enforcing device on man?
Could it have positive uses as a "correctional" device?
And if the military has remote control living rats- imagine what they could be developing in secret in regards to remote control dogs, horse...etc...etc...
Anyhow- your thoughts?

Agreed JWK - I too would tend to fear the potential misuse of this technology - whoever comes up with such an idea will ALWAYS give the excuse of saving lives (and I'm not saying it's not the case) and ignore or cover the downsides. As I can't stand the idea of experimenting on animals, I would be on the defensive and reject the whole thing.
Worth finding out more though, especially on how far developped this technology already is.
