Henrik,
I, too share your beliefs. Maybe I'm not so convinced in your total religious feelings, but your statement holds many of mine.
There have been many real life situations in my time here that have made me consider my "religious" beliefs.
The jury's still out.
But I must admit that many of the world's problems are based on this primise. Your God against My God. North Ireland, Libya, Isreal, Palastine, Iraq, Afganistan, Russia, Bosnia, the entire world.
The entire world seems to use God and his book as an excuse to do their dirty deeds for power.
I, once again, have moments in my life that I would rather believe in a good, honest after life for someone close to me to be somewhere where they belong. They were good and honest and innocent their entire life. They most certainly deserve it.
But to use that as a precident for War?
Not in Iraq, not in Northern Ireland, not in Nigera, Nowhere.
It's all been twisted. For political gain. It may be true, But now the Bible and the Koran have been shaped for monetary gain. Power and money.
Why can't the island of Ireland be a safe and comfortable home to millions of people?
You tell me.
God Bless You All,
If He can.

Not to bash religion- as all in all- I think its a good thing...
But the thing that bugs me is the missionaries... even to this day- churches are sending out missionaries to tell poor souls in distant lands that their traditions and beliefs suck- and they should believe what the West believes instead.
There are few things more vile than sending people out to non-Christian countries and trying to rip families apart and cause internal unrest- all in the name of "my God is better than your God."
If people want to join a religion- let them approach it themselves- don't shove it down their throats!

Very good point, Wick - missionaries suck. The whole idea of the colonialist missionaries' goal to "save africa from the africans" etc., sickens me.

Thanks Wycco, that's what I mean - you don't see any atheists going around trying to convince entire populations NOT to believe.
I think us non-believers are more secure about our beliefs than the believers are - am I making any sense? ROFL!!!
Henrik - perfectly well said. When it comes to taking responsibility for what they preach, the church is nowhere to be seen. Criminals all of them, I say!!!
NC - good to see you back with excellent comments as usual (how's the zippo doing?).
To all: religion is about caring for one another, be there when you are needed, sharing without imposing, loving without expecting anything in return. That's my only religion. I find all this right here at Shamu Croaks.

I didn't call you a criminal SmokinGun. What I said was within a context and about a situation in particular. You don't have to identify yourself to the (mis)behaviours of the congregation you belong to. If you go down this path, then I am a criminal too as many atheists committed unspeakable crimes and as part of the atheist congregation (so to speak) I should have to identify myself to them? I don't think so.
Keep things in perspective SG - I have absolutely nothing against you, if you were scum you wouldn't be here on Shamu.

i know what you meant greg, perhaps the word "all" in the term "all of them" was misleading. no offense meant and none taken. smokingun

it appears that the nine year old girl will get an abortion. it was difficult finding a doctor initially because of the complications plus the fact that the bastard who raped her suffered from STD which the poor girl also got subsequently. 3 doctors have agreed to perform the delicate procedure. i for one will be saying a little prayer that she comes through ok, and that she will be able to put this behind her and grow up to be a happy and productive adult.
and as far as the bishop opposing the abortion, had i been there, i would have no hesitaion in telling him to get stuffed.
i know that this story has touched us all in some way. and that all of you will be hoping for the best.

That little girl is in my thoughts, as are the many others who suffer in silence and will never get help.
