That's it, Zap 'em Zapiro! Or shall I say Zap Zim Zapiro? Just a snippet on Zimbabwe: One of my bosses is into Bass fishing in like big-time. The Zim guys invited his team for a competition some 100 miles from Harare, which they did attend after major planning and recce stuff. Listen to this: A good evening at the pub cost him (he paid for everything) Z$70000.00. In SA language that's about R280.00 The Barman cum Chef, or Chef cum Barman, who attends to everything, and I mean everything earns the equivalent of R40.00 per month Thats about Z$10000.00 which, if you convert it to beer, buys you and a bit, beers. The families set traps for mice and rats at night which is almost all of the food they can get. And inflation is at some 300%, and climbing. He reckons that these guys just don't have a closing time. You leave when you decide and then they'll close the Bar. Amuckingfazing! Also, the street Mugabe lives in is off limits after 6 in the evening. Barricaded and armed soldiers and the lot. And what seems to be quite indicative of the situation is that the normal Zimbabwe people know who the so-called War-Vets are. They know of their mansions, they know their names, they know where the got their property and other riches from. When I asked him about his general feeling about Zim, his answer was, "It's F*cked", that's all. OK, from my side this is all hear-say so I cannot back it up at all. Nonetheless, it is disturbing. I have no idea as to even a possible answer. Apparently GWB is coming out this way soon but, shit, I hope he does NOT come up with an answer. A new Colonial power is not what is required here. Some stern action from within and around, maybe, yes. Too a large degree I believe that we should be left to our own devices here, even if it does take time. No, this is not intended to be humour

Mugabe needs to be taken out... A shame, he led the country to democracy... and now he's led it away again!

Mugabe needs to be taken out... A shame, he led the country to democracy... and now he's led it away again! I agree with you on the "taken out" bit but by whom is another question which hopefully will be resolved soon, as the whole situation has de-stabilising effects on Zim's neighbours. When you say "..he led the country to democracy.." I wish to point out that this is only partially true. The tribal rift in Zim has always been quite prominent. I think raptor will help me out on this one. The Mashona and, is it the, Ndebele have never really seen eye to eye. Joshua Nkomo, the other main role player in the "Democracy" drive and our dear uncle Bob were actually in opposite camps when it came to tribal things. Mugabe absolutely sidelined and marginalised Nkomo right at the beginning of the new-found "Democracy". Democracy in Africa is not the same as in the 1st world. In the 1st world, elections will, in most cases, look after a reasonably well chosen government. In SA, and I will venture, the rest of Africa also, the constitution is rather a bit complex, given the education and literacy levels of the citizens in general. You have to make allowance for tribal representation big time as you find tribal pockets within your greater democratic idea. Chiefs still have to rule, and Captains still have to be Captains. Together with Presidents, Ministers and even Ambassadors. The Westminster system does not work here. We believe, in SA that is, that we do have something that works or rather, can work. All we need is support. From within first, and then a lot of trusted support from outside. The African peoples can be very suspicious of anything closely resembling a Trojan Horse. And, at the same time, the African peoples can be rather gullible at times. This is sometimes unscrupulously exploited. So, whoever makes a move, tread lightly. Please. Should we not move this elsewhere? Sid
