It was about 1979 when I started cooking really full time... and I was a budding shift worker at a TV station...I was sharing a house with some buddies, and we split up the work load -- I was the cook. The afternoon shift started at 3PM, so I'd throw something on the slow cooker, or whatever so it'd be ready by 6 or so... dash back to eat, then back to work for the last half of the shift.
One day I put on a lamb stew... brought it up to the boil.... covered it... and failed to reduce the heat to low simmer. And took off for work, I was a bit late. When the other guys got home an hour later, the stew had carbonized, the house was full of smoke (remarkably acrid, BTW), but the place hadn't burnt to the ground, yet. OOOPs. Ruined a pot.

In college, I used chocolate milk instead of regular milk in a Macaroni and cheese craft dinner. The color was most apetizing.... lol
