A massive fire in the tinder dry forests surrounding Kelowna BC (Canada) has forced the evacuation of as many as 30,000 of the town's 100,000 residents from their homes. At present, another 10,000 people are on 1 hour notice to abandon their property. The scene is one of complete & utter chaos. For more (and pictures), see: www.jasonpettyjohn.com/fire.htmCFF

They haven't had "rain" in that part of southern BC in almost 6 weeks . An unusual weather system (a localized high pressure system) is basically blocking any clouds from forming over / entering into the entire region. No rain .... in the forseeable future. Fire experts say they need a good week of heavy rains *without lightning* to extinguish the blaze (all that the hundreds and hundreds of fire workers and dozens and dozens of water bombers / helicopters are doing is trying to keep it at bay). My best wishes to all involved, some of those fire fighters will truly be fighting their arses off.
I still remember when the sky blackened over Sydney on Christmas day. By 4:00pm in the afternoon it looked like it was 8:00pm at night, ash was everywhere on Boxing Day and we were living right on the beach well away from any fires.
First day back in office in central Sydney and the whole place stank of smoke, the whole city stank of smoke and anyone with any respiratory problems was recommended to wear a mask…
Needless to say they believe it will take at least 20 years for Sydney’s national parks to regrow…
All you can really do is fight on and persecute any of the little bastards that caused it… (just don't persecute someone for a scape goat thou...)
(DeadCat)
It was not long after that one, that they lost 150 houses in Canberra in another one…

We have friends in Kelowna, they live just off the lake. Pretty scary, haven't heard from them in awhile.
