Pabs,
I loosely follow Universidad Catholic in Chile. All those times I was in Chile installing instrumentation, I decided to pick a team and follow them. Even managed to see a few games over the years. Poor cousins to Brazilian and Argentinian soccor though.

Hey Rick,
That's pretty cool that you still try to keep up with them. I like U Catolica a lot more then U de Chile. There's a certain glamour to Catolica that I like. But you're right: in South America nobody comes even close to the Argentinians or the Brazilians. The only other team in South America that I feel very strongly about is Boca Juniors from Buenos Aires. That's the team that launched Maradona intro stardom.

That's the team that launched Maradona intro stardom. Hiss... Booo.... Hiss... Maradona- the Michael Schumacher of 80's football. Like Schumie- had talent- but would stop at nothing to achieve his "goals"- including cheating- assault on other players AND using illegal aides! (steroids et. al.) When one cheats... no matter how good they are- they are black flagged in my books! Maradona is definately in my hall of infamy! Pele is the true South American football hero- even if he can't wave a chequered flag properly!

LOL
No argument there Wyc: Pele was better. But I am fond of Maradona because I actually saw him play, and I am sorry but that goal against England in Mexico 86 (was it?), has to be one of the greatest goals in the history of the World Cups.
To me it's a bit like the Senna - Clark argument. I saw Senna race but I've only read stuff about Clark...

Greatest goal? It was a handball! He punched it into the net... One incidence I could forgive him for... but whenever I watched him play (noted: on TV, and many years ago) he was nasty on the field- he would foul people, dive, and generally just be unsportsman like. Granted its been a long time since I watched Maradona play- and also granted- he was not much worse than the rest of the Argentine's- both then and now, Argentina has always been a team of on-pitch bullys.

Not that one!! the other one....the one where he pretty much dribbled through the entire English team and scored.

Speaking of diving, I think Jurgen Klinsmann was a pretty hectic diver at least in the time that I watched him play. The one that I remember most is from the 1990 World Cup final against Argentina when he was cynically tackled but did he make the most of it! He rolled several times and then when coming to a stop, leaped back up into the air supposedly in pain like a fish out of water. Regarding Maradona, I think it was either 1990 or 1994 where he again handballed the ball and got away with it, can't remember if it was a goal or led to a goal though.
