I have no idea how it happened either, and I don't expect there to be any footage given the size of the desert, but they probably went too fast over a dune.

very odd, i have never seen the Dakar Rally on TV so i will have to see if it is on speedvision. Of all the places to have this happen, i would have figured that the desert would be really safe compared to all of the other places they race at.

Believe me TC, when you see them race at 170 or 180 kmh across the desert, and then jump on the dunes, it is far from safe!! As an example, take the accident Shinozuka had the other day, measurements from the impact show that he flew some 84 meters (not actually the 100 I mentioned in a earlier post) before hitting the ground nose first. His speed at impact must have been well over 100 kmh. Another example, the Swedish bike rider I have mentioned, PG Lundmark, had a "small" accident the other day. After jumping over two bumps at a speed of about 100kmh, he hit very soft sand, causing the bike to stop instantly. He continued to fly another 35 meters befaore landing. I should perhaps add that PG accomplished the oustanding result of winning yesterday's stage and being 4th in today's. If you are interested, they have a good web site, with video footage etc. www.dakar.com/2003/us/

Sounds like having sand is an excuse to see if the car can fly. There is no way in hell i would ever try that. call me old fashion but my feet stay on the ground when i race.
