Ruby 2; Cockney Rhyming Slang is 2 hundred years old, however, such things as "Curry" weren’t around then, so as time passed new words were entered, hence in the late 50,s Ruby Murray became Curry and right up to date, Brittney Spears = Beers. A word of warning, if you call someone a Burk, that originates from “Berkshire Hunt” but to be polite the word that rhymes with "hunt" is not used. Anyway, as I got a bit Schindlered (Schindlers List) last night, I will sign off with a little Bio of dear Ruby.
Ruby Murray was a precocious youngster and she began her entertainment career as a child singer in and around her home city of Belfast. She was still in her teens when she replaced Joan Regan on the BBC TV programme 'Quite Contrary'. However, it was not her youth but her beautiful voice that caught the mood of the British public; sweet and gentle, but full of character. She was widely regarded as the 'voice of Ireland' and she soon became one of the most significant performers in the UK and Ireland during the decade. She appeared in numerous shows and once even under the direction of Gordon Parry in the 1956 comedy movie 'A Touch Of The Sun'. However, it was her recording career that would prove to be the most astonishing. Her early chart hits came like 'a ton of bricks', first came 'Heartbeat' followed by a string of top ten entries including her massive #1, 'Softly, Softly'. She had no less than five records in the top twenty chart simultaneously (all of her first five full releases!) - a feat that occurred during March 1955. Despite her strong associations with Northern Ireland she made her home in England following her marriage in 1957.
Sadly, by the end of the 1950s, Ruby's chart career was over. Her choice of material, and her image, were perhaps a little too sentimental for the less innocent era of the 1960s. However, she remained a popular performer and her LP recordings were far from ignored even into the 1970s. She continued to perform regularly, though in later years she was regarded as a nostalgia act.
Ruby Murray died on December 18th 1996.

Thanks Danny! I know about cockney rhyming slang of course, but I didn't know about that one! Oh, and I won't be calling anyone a berk in a hurry, now I have that explanation! lol That stuff about Ruby Murray was fascinating, thanks. I haven't heard of her at all, though i'm sure i must have heard a song of hers at some point in time. Julio! thanks for the welcome mate, but I cannot drink all that guinness! for one thing, I hate beer, and for another - after drinking that lot i would be ! Now, if that were vodka, then it would be a different matter!

And just to make the song going round and round bit a wee tad worse, Melanie pronounces it "Goooood Bye, Rooo-bay Tooos-day". Many, many times at the end. Almost like "Round, like a circle in a spiral, like a wheel within a wheel ..... like an ever spinning reel" and so on. Ad infinitum. Suffer then ;D

Hey wycco! No, I'm not from the US at all, I hail from Winchester, England! Would I be calling Pabs gorgeous if i was in Texas? Nah- if you were in Texas you might know what Pabs really looked like!!!! jejejejeje (sorry Pabs) Now that I know about these restaurants however, I feel I must pop over and pay one a visit! Unfortunately they're not that good- if you came over hear I would recommend Carolina's specialty instread- shredded Pork BBQ smothered in a tangy sauce (otherwise known as Carolina BBQ).

Wycco, We're trying to make her feel at home here. Recommending Carolina substandard BBQ to her is not nice. Texas BBQ, on the other hand... ;D

TC, I think Rick and Smokingun are M$ fans too! Although you're right- I think the vast majority are not fans... LOL... Yes try both Ruby- You'll see the Carolina BBQ is better... Texas BBQ is where they scape an armadillo's squashed remains from the road (where it has been baked by the hot Texas sun)!
