I dont.
I do however think some religious people are intolerant of others personal beliefs. That I find hard to understand.

Never, but I've never had a Joho come to my door either. But sit down with someone who is an aethiest and they will usually be quite intolerant with ones belief in God.

Intolerance - or simply not willing to agree.
Most atheists/agnostics couldn't care less if you believe in God or not. Many will think the "belief" is rediculous- but few will call you "stupid" for believing.
When atheists/agnostics seem intolerant- it is usually because of the "T3" factor- when you hear "M$ is the greatest- he could win the WDC in a Minardi" the first thing you want to do is strike back and tell them Michael is worthless (not Worthless, with a big "W", the forumer).
It's the same when you're constantly bombarded with people (and in the US, the government) constantly trying to convert you- you can tend to come off as hostile occasionally, even if thats not how you really feel. The "T3" factor, religion style.

So you sit down for a talk with an aetheist. Who is most likely to bring up the subject of religion? As far as I'm concerned, I'm much more likely to to start talking about motor sport or something.

I don't think we can generalize. I've encountered intolerant people on both sides. I've even encountered intolerant religious fanatics who've told me I'm stupid for being Catholic. Again, it all comes down to the individual.

Pabs- yes I always get disgusted when "Protestants" bash the Catholics. Many Southern Baptists claim all catholics are going to hell because they ... *ahem*... worship multiple gods... LOL Even my wife- who is fairly tolerant of almost everyone (heck she married an agnostic)- seems rather intolerant in her view of Catholics- she even told me- she could never have married me if I were a catholic. I've been in many arguments with many different people throughout my life- defending Catholics... (and I'm agnostic- not Catholic- but like Srrh, I like playing devils advocate alot- plus I like to stick up for those unjustly attacked). To many people around here- being a Catholic is a worse crime than being an Agnostic! I'm constantly amazed at the hostility towards Catholics. Catholics arn't real christians to people around here... They're Eeeeeeevil... LOL- the fact that (with the exception of the Orthodox church) Catholics are the oldest Christian church- and Protestant churchs SPLIT from the Catholics- not the other way around- doesn't seem to enter their minds. Ahhhh- those crazy southern Baptists!

Multiple Gods?
Do you mean Mary?

Multiple Gods? Do you mean Mary? Yup, A common believe that many Southern Baptists have is that because Catholics often speak to saints- Mary too, they are elevating the saints to Godhood. Many baptists will tell you that Catholicism is polytheistic and that the saints represent God's "pantheon". They're pretty stubborn about the whole issue- not surprising really- I've been in one Baptist church where the preacher spent the whole time demonizing catholicism- saying the "Priests" are demi-Gods... and saying "Catholics don't believe they can talk to God directly- they need to talk through the demi-God priests". Not surprising they hate Catholicism when their religious elders teach them incorrect things about the denomination. It's all ludicrous- but yes, many Baptists do think speaking through "Mary" or the "Saints"- or even "Priests" is raising them to deity level. They consider it blasphemy- and thus is why they despise it more than not believing in God at all. Note- not all Baptists are like this- but many are- these arn't isolated cases.

Aye Wycco, I can relate to pretty much everything you said.
Da Silva,
Yes, that's basically what the mean. Other Christian religoins say that Catholics tend to "worship" Mary and some of the saints as well as their images. Though I wouldn't really call it worshipping. I mean, we don't put them above God nor do we think of them as Gods at all. In fact, part of the reason the Orthodox church separated from the Catholic church was the large iconoclast struggle led by the Orthodox priests. That's why if you enter an Orthodox church you will not see very many images (paintings, sculptures, etc) of anything other than Jesus.

Hehehe, We obviously have a better image of women than everybody else. Right Pabs. I have encountered this arguement many times over the years, but as Pabs mentioned Catholics do not worship Mary as a God, only as the Mother of Jesus, but you guys already know that. I am surprised at the position of your Southern Baptists though.
