Good guess Henrik. I would also guess that if you want to know which .dat files are which, you could use the avi.preview tool. It allows one to view a file while it is still dowloading. Just a guess of course.... S Thanks! But then, what do I know, I have never downloaded anything.... Hey about "Bowling for...", I have been trying to get if for a week now, and it is only half completed! Getting really frustrated! Also, I was really wondering about what is a good file size for a good quality film? Saw one that was in two parts, each file being roughly 700 meg (I assume a result of the film having been ripped to two CD's in DivX). Others, like Bowling, is only one file of around 700 meg.

Bowling, is only one file of around 700 meg. The one I got was under 720 meg and VERY good quality. I'd tell you exactly how large but I burned it on a CD and lent it to someone, i don't have it on hard-drive anymore. I found out that sometimes, when your files dowload very slowly a "find more sources for download" or a "jump supernode" will do the trick... If I had dowloaded Finding Nemo, it would be my record in terms of speed: complete movie, medium quality: 1hour and 21 minutes. On the other hand, I would be dowloading a 1974 Fulci for the last 3 month. S.

i've never used kazzaa. i did use napster once a long time back. i guess i'm more a music fan than a movie fan.
i remember reading somewhere that a copyright only lasts for about 20 years. is this true?? if it were then i guess i'm out of the woods seeing that i am rather fond of oldies.
from the moral point of view, stealing is wrong. and artists need to earn their money just like the rest of us. but i wonder if i were to buy a Perry Como cd, how much of what i pay does he get?? ok i know that is a silly question, lets take the case of ABBA. as far as i know Bjorn, Benny, Agnetha and Frida are all still alive, but do they still get a royalty if i were to buy a cd??
this is all moot of course as most of my mp3's have been ripped of cd's that i bought. yep that's right, living in india, earning "coolies" wages i still prefer to buy the legit cd's and rip the songs. i do this because i am very choosy about the quality of songs that i have. i use VBR (Variable Bit Rate) encoding for my songs, and use the best to rip the tracks to wav and then convert the wav files to mp3. music match, real player are crap. windows media player?? i don't need to tell you that it's crap. EAC for ripping and LAME for encoding on windows, grip for ripping and bladenc for encoding while on linux. i also like to mix up my songs and make "my current flavour audio cd" for a particular time that i listen to while trying to sleep at night.
most of my listening is done at home while i'm working on my pc though. i know that in a small way i have comitted a crime. but it does not bother me too much seeing that the music companies do rip us of most of the time. i remember listening to "hero" by mariah carey, i liked the song so much that i bought the tape(those days we could not afford a cd player) i remember liking only 3 songs, the rest were not worth doggy litter. i felt cheated at the time and i still do feel cheated. English casettes were comparitively expensive in india at the time.
am i against music piracy? to an extent yes. do i support the RIAA? nope. they are getting what they deserve.
before i end my rambling, in answer to the question asked at the beginning of the thread about where a bulk of the money paid for a cd goes?? i saw a program on BBC not to long ago that said that the end distributer i.e. the music shops take the biggest cut of the pie.

p.s. any other oldies fans out here?? I suppose that depends on what you imply by oldies! Going by what kids listen to today, and what I like to listen to, then I suppose "my" music can be qualified as oldies, However, I tend to refer to as oldies things more from the 50's and 60's, and there I bet OT and Northcoast would think that to be normal and not oldies... In any case, I'm obviously a big time 80's victim, but I also really like much of the rock from the 70's.

SG - As far as I know it's 50 years AFTER the death of the author or their direct heirs (or something like that). That's why there is hardly any royalties on classical music. But I could either be mistaken or the law has changed, whatever, or it's simply me that need a brain change.

I thought copyright lasted for 25 years, which is why people make cover versions of songs from 25 years ago a lot. Some are shorter, some are longer though aren't they?

SG- i like a lot of music that could easily be classified as 'oldies' ...in fact i grew up listening to 'Solid Gold FM' Wich was primarily music from the 50's and 60's and am hence still quite partial to it. I also like a lot of Jazz, swing etc ranging from the 20's till the present. About royalties?? HAH! a musician see's nearly nothing from air time or CD sales...all the cash is made in the signing of the contract. A record company pays for you up front and they will be damned if they are not going to exploit you for all you are worth! My dad is a musician and has released at least 10 CDs, has had NZ chart toppers and a couple of songs that went to #1 overall on American student radio but the royalties he recieves are paltry. That said, i buy CD's(and Vinyl) without exception... what can i say, i like to actually have the authentic physical item, with the pictures and all. Plus i hate the distortion that inevitably comes with music encryption. Just my 2 cents

Plus i hate the distortion that inevitably comes with music encryption. Just my 2 cents my parents have a classic collection of vinyl at home. and in remarkably good condition as well. most of my cd's are of songs from the years gone by. i'm not much into jazz and blues though. i also play the keyboard when i get the time, i'm not very good but i enjoy doing that. beautiful music always has an effect on me. everytime i listen to cavatina, i get a lump in my throat. i don't know why, i heard the tune long before i saw the movie, so the movie had nothing to do with it. same is the case when i heard the tune of "memories" being played on the piano. maybe i'm just a little bit wierd. could you provide some more information about your dad's music?? smokingun

I don't think your weird smoking.
One sunday, I was cooking lunch while listening to radio 4, when suddenly this piece of music came on - I hadn't heard it before, but it moved me to tears almost instantly.
The song was 'Somewhere over the rainbow' by Eva Cassidy. (she passed away, much too soon)
At the time I was listening, I didn't know it was her singing, but of course now I do, so I cry every time I hear it!
I have always loved this song of course, but there was something about the way she sung it, I guess.
