What probably does not come as a surprise to anybody, the “Israel” thread has gone too far. Given the seriousness of the topic, and also the strong opinions many people have, the postings in the thread were often walking a very fine line. In certain cases the line was crossed, but I believe up until now, we have all been able to take a step back and let things settle a bit. I believe my own postings have probably fueled the debate further, but I don’t regret what I have said, as I stand by my personal opinions. I have always been able to accept the opinions of the others, even though at times I have been angered by what was written.
I don’t believe in personal attacks in any way. Insulting one another is never the answer, and it really doesn’t make you feel much better once you have done it. When you read something that makes you very angry, write a response but don’t post it right away. Come back to what you have written a bit later, and I am certain that you will change what has been written. Although this is a great media, it also has its flaws. One is that when something is written and posted, it makes a very strong statement. A reader does not necessarily see or understand the tone of the message, nor does the reader fully comprehend the emotion behind it. The words are simply there in black and white. When we speak, we can express ourselves in a totally different way.
To speak of the details in question at this point, I believe what you posted Beef was wrong, and that it could indeed be interpreted by others to imply that you were accusing us of wishing there were more deaths. Upon reading this, as upon reading several other postings you made, I chose not to respond on the moment, as I would probably have made some personal insult to you. I believe that you Srrh made your response too quickly, and as of this point there was no real turning back for the two of you. It all ended in a classic “flaming” war, in which you Srrh used the powers you have as a moderator, only to infuriate Beef to the point of choosing to leave. In fact, you are in a tricky situation as you are moderator at the same time as being one of the more active participants of the debate. A suggestion from my part, since there are more than one moderator available, is that you avoid using your moderator status in any thread where you are very involved.
I think it was RacerX who complemented us in that very thread a while back for having a heated debate with two very different opinions, yet we always maintained a mutual respect. We really should try to live up to that praise.
Beef, about your choice to leave Shamu, I ask you to reconsider. I would like to think that you are able to see that there is a lot more available here than just one thread. Like you, I am also very involved with the Middle East conflict. I have my opinions, and feel very strongly about them, and will not hold back on stating them. At the same time, I leave that discussion in that thread. It will never stop me from posting a joke or discussing the latest F1 race. If you feel that the Israel thread has gone too far, and that you can never discuss that issue with Srrh, then leave that thread alone, but don’t leave Shamu.
